How we got started

HopeWill Foundation was started in 2011 by a group of friends who rallied around one of their own, Will Wellman, who was diagnosed with Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). They hosted a backyard BBQ competition to raise money for Nephcure Kidney International in an effort to expand research for their friend and all that are affected by the disease. This annual event blossomed into the widely attended Tampa Pig Jig event that has grown massively to draw a crowd of over 12,000 people, 80 BBQ teams, and a lineup of A-list country music acts.

New name, Same Heart

Formerly Old Florida Federation, we transitioned the name to HopeWill Foundation in 2024, ushering in a new era of dedication and determination in the fight against FSGS and Nephrotic Syndrome. Through collaborative efforts, HopeWill Foundation aims to accelerate progress towards improved treatments and, ultimately, a cure.

The HopeWill Foundation focuses on community building and giving back in meaningful ways and will leverage the success of Tampa Pig Jig to expand philanthropic efforts in Tampa Bay.

HopeWill Foundation will maintain its signature event, the Tampa Pig Jig, as part of its continued outreach and fundraising initiatives. Additionally, the foundation has introduced patient socials throughout the year, providing opportunities for individuals affected by rare kidney diseases to connect, share experiences, and build community.

Meet Will Wellman

Why we got started

In “Learning to Live on Dialysis and Inspiring Those Around Him,” a group of filmmakers from the University of Notre Dame documented Will Wellman’s ongoing journey with FSGS and how it led to the founding of the Tampa Pig Jig. A constant inspiration of both grace and strength, Will has not only persevered in his fight but has also served as a resource to others combatting this disease. Our efforts continue in the hope that Will can one day be free from dialysis.
